Are you thinking about Drinking and Driving ?

* Approximately 40% of Americans will be involved in a traffic mishap blamed on alcohol.
* Alcohol related crashes cost the nation $46 billion dollars annually.
* One million people are involved in alcohol related crashes in the country.
* Drinking and Driving is the most frequent violent crime committed in the country.
* Alcohol involvement is the single greatest factor in motor vehicle deaths and injuries.
* Only 4% of all crashes involve the use of alcohol, but 41% of fatal crashes do.
* From 1980 to 1994 alcohol related deaths dropped by 43%.  In the year 2000, that
number jumped by the largest percentage ever.
* Approximately 16,000 deaths a year are caused by drunk driving - 1 every 33 minutes.
Put in perspective - 2 jumbo jets crashing each week!

Are you still thinking about Drinking and Driving?

* It is a crime for anyone with a blood alcohol level of .08% or higher to operate a
motor vehicle on a public roadway.
* Anyone arrested for driving under the influence must submit to a chemical test to determine
the alcohol content of the blood.  If you refuse, your license will be suspended for one year.
* A 140 pound driver with a blood alcohol level greater than .04% (about 2 beers) is 1.4 times
more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash...if the same driver drinks
two more beers - they are now 11times more likely..a six pack (.15% BAC) -
they are now 380 times more likely!

Are you STILL thinking about Drinking and Driving?

* On your first drunk driving offense you will get a fine of at least $ 1337- but probably closer to $3,000!
* You will be required to attend an alcohol awareness class at a cost of $300-$500.
* You will visit the MORGE and pay $150 to witness the effects of drinking and driving.
* Your insurance rates (if you can still get coverage) will increase about FIVE times - maybe $6,000
or $7,000 a year...and don't look for your rates to come down anytime soon.
* If you get a lawyer - look at paying from $1,500 to $10,000
* PLAN ON YOUR FIRST DUI OFFENSE COSTING YOU BETWEEN $ 10,000- $ 20,000
*
You will spend at least a night in jail and could be sentenced up to six months in jail and another
60 days if you were traveling at an excessive speed.
* YOU WILL LOSE YOUR LICENSE FOR AT LEAST 30 DAYS BUT PROBABLY 90.
How will you get to work?  Will you still have a job (some companies will fire you)?
* If you decide to chance it and drive on a suspended license and get caught - you WILL go
to jail for 10 days and pay close to another $1000 in fines.
* You will be on probation for three years.  If you have a TRACE of alcohol in your system
while driving you will be arrested for your SECOND DUI.

Now are you thinking twice about Drinking and Driving?

Getting caught could be the best consequence of Drinking and Driving.  Consider the other possibilities...

* What if you are one of the 16,000 that die in an alcohol related car crash?
* What if you kill somebody else that was not drinking and driving.  What if you killed your neighbor...
your best friend or date...your wife...your own child.

PLEASE Don't Drink and Drive.
